What research measures about AI in customer service
Customer service is the function where the effect of AI has been measured best. A study published in 2025 in the Quarterly Journal of Economics followed 5,172 customer support agents equipped with an AI assistant. Agents resolved 15% more issues per hour on average. The gain reached 30% among the least experienced agents and stayed small among the most experienced.
AI therefore spreads the best agents' practices to newer ones. McKinsey also estimates the productivity potential of generative AI in customer operations at 30 to 45%.
The customer service tasks AI speeds up
| Task | What AI does |
|---|---|
| Replies to requests | Clear first draft in the company's tone |
| Case history | Summary of a long exchange before replying |
| Standard replies and FAQs | Writing and updating them from real requests |
| Complaints | Rewording a sensitive reply, with no risky promises |
| Analysis | Grouping contact reasons to spot recurring problems |

The rules to follow
A wrong answer sent to a customer commits the company. The training teaches you to give the AI the company's real policies, to check every reply before sending it and not to enter personal data without a defined framework.
