Prices are almost identical
On individual plans, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus cost $20 per month in the United States. Claude also offers a discount on the annual subscription ($17 per month). Both have higher plans at $100 and $200 per month for very intensive users.
On team plans, Claude Team and ChatGPT Business cost $20 per user per month with annual billing, or $25 with monthly billing, with a minimum of two users. Price is therefore not the decisive criterion: the use cases are.
Comparison, criterion by criterion
Writing and tone. This is the most commonly cited strength of Claude: a natural, less stereotyped style, and a strong ability to reproduce a brand's tone from examples. For customer emails, commercial proposals or articles, it's a real advantage. It's also the main reason I use it daily for writing.
Long documents. Claude stands out in reading and summarizing contracts, reports or large case files. With Projects, its reference documents are available across all conversations.
Work organization. Both tools offer projects. In Claude, each Project combines persistent instructions and a document base. On paid plans, Claude automatically activates a document search mode when the base exceeds the model's working memory. It's very effective for structuring work by client or by department.
Data analysis. Both read spreadsheets, run code and generate charts. For the typical use of an SMB (sales, budgets, exports), the difference is small.
Images and voice. Advantage to ChatGPT, which generates images directly and offers a very accomplished voice mode. Claude analyzes images, but is not an image generator.
Agents and automation. Claude offers Cowork, an agentic workspace on the computer that executes multi-step tasks over your files, and Claude Code for developers. ChatGPT has its own agents. Both evolve very quickly: judge based on your real cases.
Integrations. Both connect to office suites and numerous business tools via connectors. Check that your specific tools are available before choosing.
Privacy: the point many companies forget
At Anthropic, consumer plans (Free, Pro and Max) include a training toggle that the user must choose. If enabled, conversations can be used to train future models and retained for up to five years. Professional plans (Team, Enterprise and the API) are governed by commercial terms and are not used for training. ChatGPT applies a similar logic between its consumer plans and its Business plans.
Rule of thumb: for customer or confidential data, use a professional plan. If you stay on an individual plan, disable training in the privacy settings.
So, which to choose?
- Write a lot (emails, proposals, content) or work with long documents: Claude.
- Produce many images or use voice extensively: ChatGPT.
- Equipping a team: run a two-week trial with three real tasks in both tools and measure time saved and quality achieved.
Many professionals end up using both. The important thing is to have one main tool well configured rather than two poorly mastered.
